Despite the appearance of relics like feather pouf pens and cell-phone antennae, Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995) is of a timeless quality, and by far the best Jane Austen adaptation we’ve ever seen. The jokes still hold up thanks to Alicia Silverstone’s brilliant delivery as Hills-girl-with-a-heart-of-gold Cher Horowitz, an enthusiastic matchmaker who adopts bashful pothead Tai (Brittany Murphy, RIP) as her newest “project.” And when, in the process, Cher realizes she’s falling for her grungy, East Coast-y stepbrother, Paul Rudd makes such an adorable proto-hipster that none of it even seems icky. No amount of repeated viewings will ever stop Cher’s mugging, or driving test, or pro-immigration debate scene from being hilarious, just like no technological development will ever stop her remote-controlled closet from being the coolest thing ever. See it again tonight with a one-hour open vodka bar before the screening, then stick around after the movie for a ’90s dance party that’s sure to include selections from it’s epic soundtrack. Miss this, as if.
