A dance repertory company is like a cover band, collecting "greatest hits" and making them available in places rock starsread, top-flight choreographersdon't often strut. Since many serious dance artists are based in New York, rep troupes have a hard time hanging on here; they're almost redundant. But Hubbard Street Dance Chicago pulls its choreographers from across America and Europe. Current artistic director Jim Vincent, who took over the 28-year-old ensemble from founding director Lou Conte in 2000, trained in ballet and subsequently danced with Nederlands Dance Theater, Lar Lubovitch (a son of Chicago, though a longtime New Yorker), and Nacho Duato's Compa Nacional de Danza. He's performed in the work of Europe's leading dance artists; he and Conte have brought many of their works into the HSDC repertory.
The Joyce season opens with four local premieres: Daniel Ezralow's SF/LB, to tunes by Leonard Bernstein; Lucas Crandall's new Gimme, to a score by the Norwegian group Bla Bergens Borduner; Lubovitch's Love Stories , to songs by Chicago composer Kurt Elling, and Duato's Gnawa, to a recording of mystical Moroccan musician-healers. The second bill, beginning August 10, includes Vincent's Uniformity, Ohad Naharin's Tabula Rasa, and Christopher Bruce's Rooster, which has music by the Rolling Stones.
