Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno: Live on Stage Invites Us to Share Her Appreciation of All Species

Rebecca Greenfield

Isabella Rossellini, it turns out, can get pretty kinky. She's fascinated by the thought of killing her partner while copulating; she's into multiple stretching penises; and she fantasizes about labyrinthine vaginas that can play tricks on males who enter them. If you've already put on your trench coat to race over to BAM, you should know that Green Porno, Rossellini's solo lecture-performance, is inspired by nature documentaries on the Sundance Channel, not by clips on YouPorn. But although it leans more PG-13 than XXX, the show offers other satisfactions thanks to its delightful star.

Rossellini, in pearls, stands at a lectern to describe the wondrous spectrum of natural reproduction, cutting away to "method acting" videos in which she slides into the skins of the creatures she's discussing — a cartoonish array of horny ducks, octopuses, dolphins, and spiders, each introduced with witty commentary. (The zoology lesson also touches on Noah's Ark, bi and homosexuality, Charles Darwin, and an imaginary forest of penises.) Though she sometimes falters with the language, Rossellini maintains a poise and generosity that invites us to share her appreciation of all species and their sexual ways. "What counts isn't perfection but diversity," she concludes, and who could argue with such a beautifully evolved creature?
