The Dick Cavett Show: John & Yoko Collection
Two of the three Cavett shows collected here date from a September 1971 interview, notable as John's first for American TV since the Beatles' breakup, that finds "the Lennons" unusually at ease, chain-smoking and chatting about A Hard Day's Night and James Thurber. Cavett seems unfazed by attempts at frame-breaking gimmickry, as when audience members covered in bags come onstage at John and Yoko's behest. The creative energy on display also encompasses John's drawings, clips from the pair's still hard-to-come-by experimental films, and a reading from one of Yoko's books. Also released: the Ray Charles Collection, three Cavett episodes from 1972 and 1973 with the late soul legend.
New Order: Item
This somewhat redundant two-disc release packages A Collection, a compilation of more than two dozen videos ranging from the mid '80s to this year's Waiting for the Siren's Call album, with the extended version of the Republic-era documentary New Order Story. Highlights among the videos include the 120 Minutes classic "True Faith" and the '80sNew Yorkinvoking "Confusion."
The Pixies: Sell Out
Better late than neverpicking up on the current fascination with all things Pixies, this live disc consists mostly of a 2004 French festival performance, although the 15 "bonus tracks" come from reunion shows across the U.S., U.K., and Japan.
