Best averted disaster by an arts organization (2008)

Drawing Center

One of the best things that happened in the art world last season was something that didn't happen. Depending on who tells the story, the good news is that the Drawing Center either backed out of or got booted from an idiotic scheme to relocate from its longtime headquarters in Soho to the so-called arts complex slated to be built near ground zero. This was one of the worst ideas to come down the arts pike since art dealer Tony Shafrazi (then a young Iranian artist) spray painted the words "Kill Lies All" (who knows what he was on about?) on Picasso's Guernica way back in 1974. Had the Drawing Center gone through with this dim-witted plan it would have effectively turned itself from a space for art and artists to little more than a tourist trap, or at best an occasional art world destination. It would have been subject to the scrutiny of bureaucrats deeming whether or not what was being shown was "appropriate." With any luck all those blockheads responsible for cooking up this lamebrain strategy have either learned their lesson or they won't get fooled again. Drawing Center, you're too important to lose. Don't do anything that dumb again, or else . . .
