Best Comic Book Museum (2008)

Gertrude Stein would say "But there's no there there." And it's true. The good people behind the NEW YORK CITY COMIC BOOK MUSEUM haven't raised enough cash to buy their own building yet, but since 1999 they've been generating special events, school curricula, and public seminars to promote "the historical and artistic legacy of comic book culture within the context of a changing society." In other words, this nonprofit is on a mission from God. Well aware that that they must first convince the American mainstream that their chosen art form is indeed an art form (in all its polymorphic and often provocative formats), the NYCCBM is promoting its yearly Golden Panel Awards for excellence in graphic storytelling, along with traveling gallery exhibits like "Heroes Among Us," a show of comic art inspired by the events of September 11.
