The Cloisters

At the subway yards, there ain't much to see beyond tracks, warehouses, and out-of-commission subway cars. But, as with the Cloisters, it's a site so removed from the workaday banality of the rest of Manhattan that it fascinates. If you stroll up there on a summer day, it seems like you're going to the ends of the known world, although cars and trains are passing overhead and nearby. Dig the broken glass on turbulent asphalt. Rifle through the trash-strewn weeds. You can spy the murky depths of the Harlem River and lazily wander the narrow, deserted roads east of Tenth Avenue. Take the 1 or 9 train to the 207th Street stop.
