Best September 11 Survivor, Visual Arts Division (2008)

Plush surveillance cameras; folk-art lamppost sculptures; devious plastic plants with leaves pruned in geometric shapes; animated architectural histories of Lower Manhattan; a memory registry with tchotchkes made to order from viewers' random reminiscences; and other mediations on loss, reconciliation, and the city's empty spaces—all are brewing in the NEW VIEWS art studios at the World Financial Center. The reincarnation of the World Views artists' residences once housed on floor 92 of the trade towers, this program is building toward a two-and-a-half-month public installation throughout the WFC complex starting October 30. Expect a witty yet heartfelt record of rising above.
