Best Midtown After-Theater Bar (2008)

Jimmy's Corner

It drifts over the streets of midtown, glowing a bit orange and faintly emitting an old Rangers broadcast--the ghost of McHale's. Times Square has been a sorrier spot since the development-driven demise of that agreeable watering hole, with its mediocre food but downmarket Deco charms. Happily, though, there's still one decent place left to get a post-Broadway pint--the venerable but often ignored Jimmy's Corner. Beautifully narrow and lined with boxing memorabilia, the 44th Street bar is an "old New York" respite from the tourist theme park that the neighborhood has become, and it's far superior to other noted post-show boites. So squeeze in, order your Jameson's, and admire the photos of pugilists past as you start your own fight about whether August: Osage Country really should have won the Pulitzer.
