Best Down-Home Diner in Queens (2008)


On weekdays, it's filled with local businessmen and retirees, but on Sundays it's church ladies with their husbands in tow sitting at the booths in Carmichael's, where the welcome is Southern to the bone. Crisply fried porgies are a must—complete with sides of vinegar-drenched, onion-topped collards or a slab of mac and cheese—as is the lightly sauced North Carolina­style chopped barbecue. An ever changing array of supersweet cobblers and densely satisfying cakes are always on the dessert stands and guaranteed to let you leave with a big smile (and a few more pounds!).
