Latest cheesesteak (2008)
What is it about New Yorkers and Philly cheesesteaks? We never seem to get them quite right, but we keep on trying. Latest and best attempt is Cheesesteak Factory, a franchise that lingered without opening for months on Queens Boulevard, then hopped unexpectedly onto Houston. Their rendition deploys sirloin, rather than rib eye, and, quite frankly, the taste of the meat is superior to several other places in town—beefy, intensely caramelized, piled especially high on the bun. Not quite enough cheese, though, from a selection that runs from Whiz to American to provolone to mozzarella (mozzarella?). And, they claim, the marshmallowy bread is imported from the City of Brotherly Love.
