Best place to get lit (2008)

Remains Lighting

With the recent demise of one of the city's most delightful specialty stores, Just Bulbs, those in search of odd or hard-to-find bulbs probably will either be left in the dark (figuratively, if not literally) or will be forced to buy their antique, Edison-type hairpin-filament lamps at specialty vendors like or practical (if rather prosaic) sites like But that's a zillion kilowatts less fun than actually standing in the middle of a store filled with thousands of bulbs of all shapes, sizes, and colors—all shining just for you. But once your basic illumination needs are met by whatever means, stroll over to the glittering, dreamlike Remains Lighting in Chelsea, where a vast array of antique and very-high-end-reproduction light fixtures can be yours—for a pretty penny. Remains has everything from stately Beaux-Arts torchières of bronze and marble to florid Art Nouveau sconces, mid-century prismatic factory fixtures, and baronial arts-and-crafts verdigris-copper carriage lamps. Best of show on a recent visit was a stark, wall-mounted, scissor-armed extension light of iron (c. 1920), graced with an unpretentious green enameled shade—a steal at $2,700.
