Best place to watch Brooklyn girls rationalize spending the rent money on a $300 top (2008)

The sign on the front door of Bird, a Carroll Gardens boutique, should say, "Enter at your at own risk." But the Brooklyn girl who can't afford Manhattan prices on her entry-level salary would probably ignore it anyway. The purposely rusted signage out front and rustic wood exterior (shack chic?) and mannequins dressed in effortlessly cool outfits in the window appeal to her inner desire to look hip without trying very hard. "How much are these earrings?" a shopper asks a saleswoman of some tiny beaded things. "$116," comes the reply. The girl's face droops. The store features two cabinets of quirky lockets and jewelry, scarves are loosely strewn on one wall, and the racks are stuffed with See by Chloé, Sonia Rykiel, Hussein Chalayan, and Phillip Lim with a good variety of smaller designer names (read: less expensive) to make it seem as though not everything is $300. But the big-name designers are nearly impossible to resist. Most likely to be overheard at the cash register: "I won't buy anything else all year," or "I'll wear this every single day." Clutching $300 Chloé tops of their own, her girlfriends nod happily in agreement.
