Best ongoing gauge for how terrible the Knicks are doing this year (2008)

Googling "Fire Isiah Thomas"

The 2006 New York Knicks are going to suck. The pundit-sportscaster-blogger-commentator nexus seems fairly unified on this point. But as the poor bastards who've been stuck rooting for this team for the last half-decade can attest, sucking doesn't cut it; there are nuanced degrees of sucktitude, and the win-loss column alone can't always articulate them. So as a leading indicator of how badly this is going, just see how many hits you get by Googling "Fire Isiah Thomas" after each horrifying loss. The embattled Knick president was hired as head coach this year, a move that struck many as a "you broke it, you bought it" punishment for several years of chowderheaded free-agency signings (Penny Hardaway's huge contract, anyone?) and awe-inspiringly bizarre draft picks (this year's Renaldo Balkman debacle nearly started a riot in Madison Square Garden). An online petition to fire Thomas has been up for months, and fans and critics alike have been razzing him nonstop. "I'm telling you, we're going to remember the Isiah/Knicks Era the same way we remember things like Enron, the Hindenburg, and the Bay of Pigs," wrote ESPN's Bill Simmons after this year's draft. When the NBA season starts on Halloween night, expect an ever growing chorus to join in the chant for Isiah's head. Thanks to Google, our pain and anguish are now quantifiable.
