The walls in the clean, white lobby of the West Village Veterinary Hospital are emblazoned with huge glamour shots of happy cats and dogs, and the place's loving regard for animals doesn't stop there. We lived with an ailing elderly cat for months, and during her frequent visits to the WVVH, the staff called her "Mama" and gave her all the affection—and top-notch care—an animal hospital should give to a sick pet. The vets were patient with our frequent freaked-out phone calls, too. The hospital is open seven days a week and offers all your basic veterinary coverage plus an in-house laboratory, oncology treatment, and laser surgery (and also Dale, the cute tattooed receptionist). Prices are none too cheap but are pretty standard for New York vets. 75 Eighth Avenue, 212-633-7400, (10014)
