Best Theater Director (2012)

Sam Gold

Some theater directors make their name through flash, drawing attention to themselves in obvious ways in their productions. But our favorite helmer these days has just the opposite style. His productions tend to be quiet. They have a calmness and focus. They rarely blare, and if they do, it's for a specific moment. There's something pleasantly enveloping about this tactic—it draws you into a play's world. Indeed, he creates a kind of intimacy of experience that's especially rare and valuable in New York theater. And New York theater seems to like that—he's directing more and more productions of higher and higher profile. He made his name over the past few years directing plays by Annie Baker—Circle Mirror Transformation, The Aliens, her adaptation of Uncle Vanya this summer at Soho Rep. (They won Obies together in 2010.) His style might be modest, but we're happy to be immodest and claim the talented Sam Gold as this year's best director. Look for another Baker-Gold collaboration this February, when he directs her The Flick at Playwrights Horizons. 416 West 42nd Street, (10036)
