This past summer, we felt a little silly when the window air-conditioner we neglected to properly install leaked a gallon of water onto our parquet floor and caused it to swell and buckle. Lesson learned! Next time we think of cutting corners—or more likely, cut corners again and have to buy some flooring—we're going to Green Depot, our bid for this year's best hardware store. Its flagship Manhattan location is probably not the first place you'll turn if you need, say, some nails or a screwdriver, but it works well as a source for large-scale home updates and construction, like cabinetry or weatherproofing or siding. Green Depot's true strength, though, lies in its collection of environment-friendly odds and ends that ranges from pricey—dual-flush toilets and odor-free paint—to über-affordable, including the shop's own brand of green household cleaner, starting at just $3.95 a bottle. On a recent trip, our favorite find was a set of super-chic white stoneware—but surprise!—it was actually a composting pail. How trashy, and we mean that in the best sense. 222 Bowery, 212-226-0444, (10012)
