In a city whose residents are too often required to part with upwards of $16 for the privilege of drinking a goddamn gin and tonic, at least we've got places like the Ding Dong Lounge. The graffitied, brick-walled room is less gloomy than just plain dark, illuminated mainly by the glow from the tabletop PacMan machine. There is not a single television set. The bathrooms are—well, the place has bathrooms. There's usually a DJ who likes classic punk and new wave, and don't be surprised if you catch a passably good live band. And the drinks are your wallet's best friend. During happy hour, which starts when the bar opens at 4 p.m. and rolls on till 8, you can get a beer and a shot for $6. Or, if you're of a mind to splurge, a Jameson and a pint'll run you $11. If you happen to see a shaggy-around-the-edges scribe at the bar imbibing the latter, it might very well be us.
