Best Supply Store for the Urban Naturalist (2013)

Times are hard for the modern Audubon, especially in this city—that is, unless you want to sketch pigeons or the overaggressive squirrels around Shake Shack. Thankfully, this Soho oddity shop provides a surrogate biology classroom in which your inner Darwin can dissect and examine to his anatomically correct heart's content. Evolution celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and whether you frequent it for the purposes of science, curiosity, or home decor (the fossils and antlers are great coffee table pieces), there's always something here to spark morbid intrigue. The upstairs room functions as a mini museum, displaying some of the store's rarest taxidermy like a zebra, monkeys, piranhas, and pythons. The models and replicas are esoteric delights as well as scientifically accurate tools, and the one-of-a-kind jewelry is beautifully eccentric. Even if you're not in the market for a $16,000 African lion skin rug, it's well worth a trip just to browse.
