If you happen to be one of those people who take to the ocean with the distinct goal of catching waves, New York can be a tough place. The beach at Jacob Riis Park is prone to minuscule waves, Jones Beach is too damn far, and Coney Island is just . . . disgusting. Thankfully, the Rockaways sport a number of beaches where the slope of the sand is just right and the wave dynamic is smooth and consistent. If you pick a good prestorm day when the tide's right, you can ride waves to your heart's content.
