Unlike at some asshole joints, it appears that at dark, homey Botanica, if you clock in enough time at the bar, you will get some back. Lagging behind my Jameson-zealous friend one evening, the supernice lady pouring drinks surprised us by giving him one on the house—and sweetly telling me my next one would be, too. (Karmically, this almost made up for the fact that last year, in a fit of besotted smittenness, another friend simply gave the winning woman tending bar my fancy lighter, without my assent.) Although free drinks for loyal customers is supposed to be typical, in general circumstances I've found it pretty scarce.
