Baseball may be America's pastime, but soccer is the fastest-growing sport in the city, and adult players from all over the world take their game as seriously here as they did at home. City soccer fields, however, have been in such short supply that amateur teams have been known to bring their own rolls of Astroturf to baseball fields, laying it out for the game and packing it up after the second half. But a permanent Astroturf surface at Chelsea Park in the heart of the burgeoning gallery scene on Tenth Avenue comes to the rescue. And rumor has it that city cab drivers are meeting at the end of their shifts at the local Twin Donut on Ninth Avenue and heading to the field for a 2 a.m. game.
