Chez Es Saada

By night, the shadows of 1st Street's tenements turn into the walls of a Marrakesh kasbah, and the light flickering from the darkened entrance of Chez Es Saada seems to beckon from a welcoming caravansary. Then it's through the doorway, past the upstairs Franco-Moroccan café, and down the rose-petal-strewn steps to the dining room, which features dishes that play modern riffs on traditional flavors, like the rich lamb-and-prune tajine or the cumin-, coriander-, and fennel-crusted salmon. It's not classical Moroccan fare, but the mystery and the magic of the decor and the hot crowd combine to make this a spot that features largely in many a dining fantasy.
