Some clubs are notorious for paying bands unfairly. Most take normal house expenses out of the door charge before a band sees a penny—i.e., the barback, the sound person, the door, and the promoter all get paid first. Then, the measly leftovers are split between three or more bands. If your group is not yet at the fortunate level of negotiating a "guarantee" and would like to get paid—at least gas money—it makes sense to get a gig at the Mercury Lounge. All paying customers are asked who they're there to see, and the club pays accordingly—and they consistently have some of the best-booked shows in the city. If you fill the house, you fill your pockets.
