Since 1934, Brooklyn's Rashid Sales Co. has been the HQ for lovers of Arabic music, with a clientele that has included David Byrne, Pete Seeger, and the late Malcolm X. Run by brothers Stanley and Raymond Rashid (the shop was founded by their Lebanese immigrant father) the store is both a bustling record and book shop and one of the biggest Arab-music import/export mail order businesses in the U.S. The Rashids stock everything, from North African rai and the music of Nubia to belly dancing instructional videos and CDs of vibrant pop singers of Lebanon and Egypt, including an extensive collection of late diva Oum Kolthoum's work. Rashid's superfriendly staff and seriously reasonable prices make this a must for global music devotees.
