An ideal place for poor dance students who can't afford a trip to Lincoln Center's New York State Theater, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts houses more than 10,000 dance films and tapes in its Jerome Robbins's Dance Division, located right across the plaza. Open six days a week, it boasts the largest dance archive in the world, covering all aspects and forms. Go here to see major works like Balanchine's "Apollo," Alvin Ailey's "Cry," and Martha Graham's "Appalachian Spring," plus lesser-known treasures like the late vaudeville tap dancer Charles "Cookie" Cook doing the Bambalina and "buck and wing."
