Best Unexpected Dive Jukebox New York 2000 - Phoenix
You wouldn't think it from looking at the place, but East Village hangout Phoenix has a wicked selection of tunes. The bare-bones bar looks like a million others, with a pool table near the back; the clientele, mostly gay men in their mid twenties to mid thirties, are there to relax, not necessarily to find a date. But the jukebox boasts a future-forward mix of music: You won't find any Junior Vasquez or diva house here. Instead, you'll get the sweet dope of Thievery Corporation, the dreamy abstraction of Boards of Canada, or Dimitri From Parismixed French house. Indie-rock lovers needn't fret, eitherthe box includes the Pixies, the Breeders, Guided by Voices, and Le Tigre. And for hip-hop, there's Dr. Dre and the Beastie Boys.
