In this fly-by-night culture, staying power is impressive. It's even more impressive if quality and integrity stay intact as well. So the GIANT STEP folks, who are over a decade old now, deserve props for hanging on through the thick and thin of NYC nightlife—they've been around before the cabaret/Giuliani debacle, and they'll be around long, long after. Bolstered by their weekly club night on Thursday at Shine featuring resident Ron Trent, plus an endless run of impressive one-off shows featuring the likes of Ben Watt, Femi Kuti, LTJ Bukem, and Gilles Peterson, the promotions-record company, headed by Jonathan Rudnick and Maurice Bernstein, consistently brings in left-field talent spanning different genres that challenges New Yorkers' noggins.
