Best Place to Throw Some Energy Into New York 2001 - Housing Works

HOUSING WORKS is a not-for-profit, minority-controlled organization dedicated to helping those living with HIV, particularly those who are homeless and whose situation is further complicated by chemical dependence and/or mental illness. This place does a lot of good. It gets people housing, gets them jobs, gives them therapy, and accepts clients as they are; this is one of the few places that will help a client even if they are still chemically dependent and doesn\'t throw them out if they relapse. Volunteers work in the Housing Works Bookstore and Café (334-3324), tend the thrift shop, and tutor clients in a number of subjects. The bookstore and thrift shops raise needed money for the program and host cool spoken-word readings as well.
