Best Recycled School Building New York 2001 - P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center
The wheel-inside-a-wheel feeling of looking at radical art inside radical architecture can be exhilarating, but sometimes there\'s a price for such multitasking, like a post-visit nap, or a headache, or dizziness . . . or nausea. And the sterile-white-box approach to presenting art, on the other hand, has likely driven viewers to the mud-wrestling pit. As far as art museums go, P.S.1 CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER is the subtle alternative that still manages to be radical. Along with its creative programming and knack for picking and showing exciting emerging artists, this big 19th-century Romanesque school building is mellow, with a funny vibe that suggests a few unruly school-kid ghosts are caught in its ether.
