Best Schizophrenic Store Concept New York 2001 - Stüssy/Headporter
Everything about the STÜSSY/HEADPORTER shop on Wooster Street should work in tandem, at least ideally. Stüssy, hallowed label of skaters and white hip-hop kids, and Headporter, Tokyo-based supplier of urban-aggressive bags and accessories, came together last year in a bi-level concept store. You'd think that it would create a cross section of customers, but most times, the Japanese kids run upstairs to check out the new additions to Headporter's line of shoulder bags, wallets, and backpacks while prepster kids from Connecticut stay downstairs, picking through Stüssy's monogrammed button-ups and hoodies. Will fashion ever unite the two disparate worlds? Or are they destined to stay locked in cultural stasis?
