Willie's Burgers

You'd think the nonfranchise burger restaurant would be a thing of the past. But the southeast corner of Eighth Avenue and West 145th Street hosts an aged yellow lean-to known as WILLIE'S BURGERS. Don't believe all the signs stenciled on the front offering jalapeño burgers, fried fish, and a dozen other things, most of them unavailable. Instead, order the cheap and well-cooked cheeseburger—festooned with lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and cheese—secure in the knowledge that the burger is 1000 times better than anything you can get at McDonald's or Burger King.
