NEW YORK PINEWOODS FOLK MUSIC CLUB

Members of the NEW YORK PINEWOODS FOLK MUSIC CLUB seem to come from the same stock as the purists who booed Bob Dylan for going electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The decidedly acoustic bunch sports its share of tie-dyes and ponytails—long, short, thick, and thinning—and hosts some of the best traditional concerts in the city (Peggy Seeger, Jean Ritchie, James Leva). Best of all, the club's many friendly do-it-yourselfers get together for old-time string-band jams and open mikes, sacred harp singing, and songwriting workshops. Not to mention potlucks and picnics. Membership has its privileges.
