Best Not-at-All-Scary Goth Bar New York 2002 - THE RAVEN
Don't be fooled by its dark exterior and otherworldly name. Though THE RAVEN carries flyers for other bars' goth parties, it hosts an eclectic range of ska, indie, and classic-rock nights. Its awkward cartoonish mascot looks more like a crow than a raven, and the bar is filled with normal-looking men in their early thirties playing Monopoly pinball and drinking beer. Though the range of DJ'ing adds variety to the patrons lounging on the comfy, antique, frayed couches, the bar's name is misleading because its very appeal lies in its lack of distinctive scenesters. Come for Tuesday's "high-gear alternative music"but please, leave your chains and black makeup at home.
