NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Turning 200 years old in 2004, the NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY museum and library almost went belly-up in the mid 1990s but rebounded with record attendance and a renewed purpose in the wake of September 11. The NYHS houses a permanent collection of art and artifacts, exemplified by the Henry Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture (from General George Washington's Valley Forge cot through Gore/ Lieberman campaign pins), plus rotating exhibits. Fall highlights include "Petropolis: A Social History of Urban Animal Companions" and "Recovery: The World Trade Center Recovery Operation at Fresh Kills."
