Best outdoor personal trainer at McCarren Park - 2006
Kwesi "Kiki" Ananyi
He's motivational and inspirational and has been offering his "Traditional Tribal Fitness" classes at the McCarren Park track for the past four years. Kwesi "Kiki" Ananyi, a certified personal trainer and former art book vendor at Astor Place, is becoming a local phenomenon as loyal followers congregate from the boroughs and tristate area to lose weight and strengthen the body. Perhaps it's Kiki's life-affirming philosophy that makes his classes so contagious. "Exercise is love, discipline, and patience. If you don't have patience, you can't achieve your goals," the fitness guru says. His basic workout technique doesn't require traditional weights or machines. All people need is their own body weight, a jump rope, and a yoga mat. Kiki currently offers daily regimens for more than 60 clients. A native of western Ghana, Kiki has a presence that's magnetic. "There's a saying: When the student is ready, the teacher will appear," says Christy Goldfeder, a Williamsburg marketing writer and holistic health counselor. The year-long motivational exercise classes are held every day in Williamsburg's McCarren Park from 5 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Free trial classes are held on Sundays from 7 to 8 a.m.
