Best photography bookstore New York 2006 - Dashwood Books

It is the best, and it is the only independently run photography bookstore (i.e., not tied to an institution or a specific publisher) in New York City. Both of which make Dashwood Books, housed in a chic if understated storefront wedged between construction sites on Bond Street, seem more like an informal clubhouse for photographic bibliophiles than a strictly commercial institution. Dollars, however, are meant to be spent here. Owner and operator David Strettell (who used to work at Magnum Photos) has assembled a tempting array of treasures, many rarely seen stateside: from a Japanese photographer's exquisite visions of Paris circa 1950 to a catalog of portraits of people with glass eyes, published by a weird Dutch imprint. The shop (which opened last year) also carries a carefully edited selection of more widely distributed titles published by houses like Steidl and Aperture.
