Best reincarnated nonprofit photography gallery New York 2006 - Aperture Foundation

The 55-year-old Aperture Foundation is famous for its magazine and book publishing operations, but the opening last fall of a 3,000-square-foot exhibition space in Chelsea has raised its gallery's profile considerably. Remarkable exhibitions have included French conceptualist Bruno Rosier's self-portraits in exotic tourist locations, modeled on the travel photographs of an anonymous stranger, circa 1960; Gary Schneider's incendiary, life-size nudes, made with long exposures that render them at once strangely luminous and cadaverous; and the haunting pictures of Southern vernacular architecture made by William Christenberry. Look for the current retrospective of Mexican photographer Lola Alvarez Bravo and upcoming daguerreotypes by Chuck Close.
