Brooklyn Bridge

It is the best of the best, a free 20-minute walk from one metropolis to another. It offers a perch high above the canyons of Wall Street and the rippling river, with uninterrupted views from the Narrows by Staten Island to New Jersey, from Liberty's statue to the Woolworth Building. And there is the Brooklyn Bridge itself: two granite towers, each with a pair of grand gothic arches to match any cathedral, connected by cross-hatched cables that Hart Crane called "choiring strings." On sunny days, it is as crowded with tourists as any Times Square block, with couples asking strangers to take a snapshot recording their visit, with the great bridge in the background. And why not? The bridge never takes a bad picture.
