Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, Top Model Salon caters mainly to an Asian clientele, but for anyone with straight hair, $30, and a penchant for a Hong Kong or Tokyo style, this is the place to go. The stylists aren't afraid to tell you that your hair is boring, and they're itching to liven up a lame 'do. While they do a variety of sweet, pretty cuts, the small crew of bleached, punky stylists prefers edgy, angular styles that require thinning shears and razor-cutting. A few warnings, though: There's an occasional language barrier if the few stylists who speak English fluently aren't around, so it's always good to bring in a photo or choose a style from their books. Also, the business hours are sometimes haphazard; the sign may say they close at 8:30 p.m. on Sundays, but get there at 7:30 and you're likely to find a locked door. Lastly, the stylists painstakingly cut and blow-dry every strand of hair—they are serious about style here—so a full wash, cut, and style can take a good hour. But at $15 for men's cuts and $25 for women's, there's no beating the funk-per-dollar value factor.
