John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, is often credited with inventing the sandwich as a convenience that allowed him to dine while he continued playing cards. That sandwich was undoubtedly a roast of some sort cradled in bread. To show how far the sandwich has come between the 18th century and the end of the world, let's feed him a banh mi at Com Tam Lan Anh, a charming and intimate Vietnamese café where the sandwich list runs to five varieties, the first of which features a triple-pork threat of ham, pâté, and pork roll, along with the usual pickled veggies, cilantro, and fresh jalapeños. Lubricated with mayo, of course.
