Sound Fix's Fix Tape Exchange
While we don?t think anyone is lamenting the demise of the cassette, it?s a little sad to think that no one will agonize over making a mixtape for that BFF or new crush ever again. But?hang on?the art form isn?t dead just yet, thanks to Steven Reker, founder of the Fix Tape Exchange, a monthly gathering at the indie-record store and bar Sound Fix in which anyone can bring a mixtape (or?because who still has a tape player??CD) to trade with someone else?and score a free drink for their efforts. Started last October with about a dozen mixtape aficionados, the exchange now attracts as many as 50 participants per session who compile their favorite songs on a different theme each month (past themes have included ?Songs to Lose Your Virginity to? and ?The Saddest Songs in the World?). ?Some people, including myself, go crazy with packaging and sensitivity to theme,? says Reker. The best mixes are ?the ones with the most effort and creativity put into it. You can tell when someone is handing you a little treasure.?
