Bigelow Pharmacy
Not so many years ago, there was a hack stand on the east side of Sixth Avenue between West 8th and 9th streets to accommodate the cabbies who took their breaks at the old-style soda fountain and lunch counter inside venerable Bigelow Pharmacy. The counter is long gone, but Bigelow?s?allegedly America?s oldest apothecary?remains. Inside is an emporium of fine pharmaceutical products and a luxurious escape from the CVS/Duane Reade chains that endlessly blight the urban landscape. No beach chairs or bargain sacks of M&M?s here?just the stuff that cleans you up good and smells nice, along with a staff that actually knows what you need.
