Best Upscale Brooklyn Gift Shop - 2008
Cog & Pearl
We love Cog & Pearl. We really do. But there?s something about its delicate and serene aesthetics that make you feel like you?re not worthy?and, actually, kind of broke. When you take a peek through the front window, the dangling assortment of totes and purses in gorgeous earthy prints draw you in, but be prepared: This isn?t your typical gift shop. The store?s owners, Kristen Overson and Seth Walter, had a bit of an ideology behind this baby: They wanted a shop filled with independent artist-made goods with no corporate strings attached. So, naturally, in addition to the lovely handmade jewelry and apparel, the store has a potpourri of eccentric goodies: gnome puzzle sets, tiny animal figurines, organic serving bowls, Eisbergfreistadt souvenir playing cards, Lomography cameras, funky copper-enamel switchplates, cork-and-wood-grain wallets?the list goes on. Good luck keeping your plastic in your wallet here.
