Steve Spagnuolo

Steve Spagnuolo isn't the best coach in New York, but he was the best coach in New York sports until January 17 when he took the head coaching job for the St. Louis Rams. The former Giants defensive coordinator was regarded by his contemporaries as the most imaginative coach in the league. He was also—and this may only become apparent this season if the Giants' defense starts to sag in the fourth quarter of big games—the real reason New York made that miracle Super Bowl run at the end of the 2007 season, constructing schemes that stopped, in three successive games, Tony Romo, Brett Favre, and Tom Brady. After beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl last year, the Giants rewarded Tom Coughlin with a four-year, $21 million contract. Spagnuolo was one of the highest paid coordinators in the NFL, but the Giants should have made more of an effort to keep him in the franchise. We have a sinking feeling that the big bucks went to the wrong coach.
