We see squatters claiming just about any patch of green grass in this town for picnicking, and we really can't blame them. But for a better and more scenic experience, head to the Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City. Plan for an evening feast so you can take in a luminous sunset and witness the Manhattan skyline light up before you. But don't bother trekking to Queens with bags and bags of goods—the Food Cellar & Co., only a block away, is where you can easily pick up fresh and tasty treats and, on your way back, you can stop at Hunter's Point Wines and Spirits for a bottle or two. With a view of the East River, the gigantic "Long Island" sign lit up, and two piers alongside, you'll easily think you're on a Hollywood studio set filming a scene from your life.
