Red Hook
There are few better ways to spend a summer day than biking over to Red Hook, picking up something delectable from Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies (204 Van Dyke Street, 718-404-6911), and finding a place to drape your feet over the promenade while you eat. This is one of the great simple pleasures of a New York summer. Who doesn't love a day of eating homemade Salvadoran pupusas at the Red Hook ballfields, heading over to the giant pool for a chlorinated dip—and then going back to the ballfields for more pupusas? That perfect day ends on the long and winding promenade, which starts behind Ikea and ends past Steve's. The view is expansive and the skyline is uncluttered: You see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, fishing boats, and Staten Island in the distance. Manhattan feels refreshingly far away.
