Groupon

We were invited to a party earlier this year for Groupon's best customers. Several restaurants that pony up huge discounts on the daily coupon website gave out samples of their grub. After munching on vegan cookies, cheesesteaks, and tandoori chicken, one guy sitting at our table went back for seconds of seared tuna salad. He piled the truffle rice balls, the duck pâté, and even the cheesesteak into a Tupperware container, then jammed the plastic lid shut and proudly proclaimed, "Tomorrow's lunch!" This is when we realized who Groupon's best customers are: the most savvy discount-seekers in all the land. New York has always cultivated a rare breed of deal enthusiast—we've never seen a rush-ticket line or an outdoor movie screening that wasn't completely mobbed. So when Groupon offers us a chance to try a new place for Botox, custom-made shirts, or cupcakes, we can't help ourselves. Especially the cupcakes. In the past year, New York's daily sale market has exploded, most recently with the high-end Gilt Groupe getting in on the action. But Groupon popped our collective-buying cherry, has scored us more facials than our pores know what to do with, and remains the best site out there for well-heeled cheapskates.
