Best Local Radio Hosts - 2010
Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad
Not everyone loves Ira Glass, OK? The Chicago-based This American Life host might be a hero to public-radio fans everywhere, but there is a small but vocal contingent of Web-based complainers who have been known to refer to him as "smug," among other things. (We do take issue with Glass's tongue-clicky thing he does between sentences.) So let Chicago have him. New York's own Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad, hosts of WNYC's Radiolab, are tongue-click-free. The team—a veteran TV journalist who pretends to be crotchety and his nerdy young counterpart, a former film-music composer—never bring smug to the mic. Instead, they seem just as fascinated by their story hour about science and general weird shit as we are, following most segments with a long pause and a "wowww." Their banter is cute, too, reminding us a little bit of Bert and Ernie's. Unlike Glass, these guys don't appear to know just how super-cool they are. But Glass knows—he frequently re-airs Radiolab segments on TAL. If he's still your No. 1 public-radio crush, then we guess it's the best of both worlds.
