When Franz Schubert died in 1828 at the age of 31, he was not widely known, but he would later be regarded as one of the greats of music's Romantic era. His work will be played this season at posh venues like Carnegie Hall, but the Schubert revival we're most looking forward to will occur more modestly on East 4th Street in December. December—yes, the perfect time to watch a trio of amusingly creative actor-musicians sing and play their way through an offbeat take on Schubert's Winterreise, getting a little drunk as they do, in the remounting of Hoi Polloi's Obie-winning charmer Three Pianos. Performers Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy, and Dave Malloy explore the noted love-and-snow song cycle while mustering their own version of a Schubertiade, one of the music parties Schubert and friends used to throw in Vienna. Sometimes melancholy but always delightful, Three Pianos was one of the surprises of last year's theater season. Plus, you won't feel left out of the bash—the cast regularly walks through the audience plying everyone with red wine. Danke! Performances start December 7, New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4th Street, nytw.org
